TrashZen Your Complete Guide to Trials Riding

Probably the most comprehensive guide to trials riding anywhere! After years of research and editing, Julien Happich, the webmaster of the popular trials tutorial website TrashZen has finally finished his new book. If you've ever been tempted by trials riding or if you are frustrated about having to dismount when you come across single-track obstacles, this guide will offer you an excellent complement of information in order to tune your skills far beyond "single-track business as usual", whether you ride on natural terrain or favor gritty urban landscapes.

This manual is a natural extension of the TrashZen online resources, fully re-edited and easy to carry around so you can refer to it where and when you need it most, in your favorite riding zone. It is essential reading for new trials riders and anyone with an interest in the elaborate and counter-intuitive techniques of Trials Riding.

From the back cover:

"Over 40 techniques and transitions are carefully reviewed, from basic bike maneuvering to expert-level moves as performed by the pros at UCI competitions. Each move is dissected step-by-step with numerous photos and tips that will boost both your confidence and riding ability. It all starts with balance and a few hops on the back wheel, before you start challenging yourself on new lines and obstacles, looking at new ways to push your limits while staying on your bike. Also included in this book are several chapters about the sport's evolution, bike geometry and setup, as well as preparation advice.

Endorsed by the Union Cycliste Internationale, this carefully crafted handbook features numerous photos from top riders competing at UCI's recent Trials World Cups and World Championships. It also features an introduction by UCI President, Pat McQuaid and a foreword by multiple Trials World champion and trials legend Kenny Belaey!"

      Comments:

I admit that the price of Your Complete Guide To Trials Riding was a bit of a deterrent and I put off purchasing it for some time. However, when I finally purchased it, I found that it did not disappoint. While the price is a bit steep (especially with shipping), the quality and scope of the content make it well worth it. To my knowledge, this is the very first book on the subject of bicycle trials and, as such, would probably sell even with mediocre content. Nevertheless, Julien Happich sets the bar so high that I doubt anyone else will clear it any time soon. This is the book that I have longed for since the late '90s. Not only is it well written and packed with detailed textual descriptions, it is illustrated in full color and systematically laid out. Even the quality of the paper on which it is printed is impressive. The presentation is professional. It looks and feels like a quality publication. Much of the content is identical to that presented on the TrashZen website. However, as is typically the case, it is easier to read and retain when presented in print. And there is enough additional content to enable the book to stand alone. The trials community is a diverse one, attracting riders from myriad backgrounds, cultures, and professions. Among those attracted to the sport are intellectuals and technical professionals like myself, who still prefer to learn and glean information from conventional books as opposed to watching videos (not to disparage the power and value of video media.) Julien's work scratches that itch and is a pleasure to read and put into practice. I recommend this book to everyone who loves the discipline of bicycle trials.
